Quiet All Day, Giraffes Hum the Night Away

Lions roar, owls hoot, wolves howl, and giraffes…Well, what do giraffes say? Mostly giraffes are quiet so their vocal communication is poorly studied—and may not exist at all. Over the years, however, observers have reported that giraffes snort, cough, grunt, and a make a few other simple sounds.

But when Austrian researchers recorded some 900 hours of giraffe audio, they were most excited to hear them making long, low-frequency humming sounds.

Mysteriously, the giraffes only hummed at night. The tonal quality of the humming supports the idea that giraffes might be saying something to one another with these noises. We may never know what.

In the desert, an animal takes whatever evolutionary advantage it can get. This is certainly true for the black-tailed rattlesnake. This snake can be found in the American southwest down into Mexico and is famous for the patterns of black shapes and bands in its scales. It can be found active at many times of day, though this is heavily dependent on the time of year, or, more accurately, the temperature. During the spring and fall, it can be found active during the day, whereas in the summer it spends most of its active time at night.

As evidenced in its name, the black-tailed rattlesnake also comes equipped with a rattler at the end of its body and will rattle it at the first sign of trouble. As with many species, this one also has fangs through which it injects its prey with its venom. Though the black-tailed rattlesnake is venomous, it is generally less aggressive toward humans. However, one should take whatever precautions possible to avoid close encounters in the wild. Its normal targets are small creatures (mice, birds, rabbits, etc.)

The Lions Mane Jellyfish is the largest jellyfish in the world. They have been swimming in arctic waters since before dinosaurs (over 650 million years ago) and are among some of the oldest surviving species in the world.

Absolutely wow.

I’m going to cry

that is absolutely horrifying.

HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT THING!

Why am I finding out about this now??

“Foolish creature of the flesh. I am ancient. I am forever. I have seen Empires rise and fall. I have seen entire species wither to cinders. I have seen the depths and the cold and the abyss that lay beyond. You are no more a nuisance to me than plankton. You are so insignificant, and I am so exquisitely eternal that I am the closest thing you will have to a God.”
-What I imagine the jellyfish would say to a human

DON’T

That is horrifying.

If that’s scary, than say hello to my little friend, the “Stygiomedusa gigantea.”

This guy has only been spotted 18 times, and filmed only twice.
Its is also about 6 meters long and about a meter wide.
Sadly it doesn’t have stingers, but it will still eat. It kinda just engulfs all it’s prey. I’m not real sure.

Aren’t Jellyfish so great? Because I think they are evil.

I WANT A SPONGEBOB EPISODE ABOUT THIS

You guys know that the diver in the image up there is shopped right?

Like there’s some pretty pictures of awesomely giant cnidarians out there, but the original image on this post is fake…

I’ll find you a source if i have to
